WHO DO I THINK I AM?

Hello fellow peers and professor. My name is Perry Garrett. It truly is a pleasure to meet such interesting people such as yourselves in such an interesting course. So the question now remains, who do I think I am? Hmmm. This is a tough one. If this question were to be presented to me 5 years ago, I could have easily said something like this; "I think I am a hardworking student on the road towards becoming a future pediatric physician in private practice." Earlier in my life, I have dreamed of helping people, specifically children, because it was (and still is) something I enjoy doing and I just enjoy children. However, I have noticed that reality seems to have this tendency to change people's minds each and every minute of every hour of everyday, including that of myself.

I initially came to Hunter College to study Community Health Education, but after several "unpleasant" volunteering services at hospital facilities such as SUNY Downstate and Kings County, I began to realize that maybe health is not the angle that I would have liked to use to help people. After taking sociology 101 and women studies 100 out of interest in the respective fields, I guess one could say that I "found" myself. Let's face it. What better way to help people than through first understanding the societies in which they interact with and how those societies interact with its individuals.

Outside of the education world, I love to partake in activities that keep me calm and within a peaceful state of mind because it helps me to observe and think about the world that surrounds me everyday. Some hobbies include learning about new cultures, studying languages abroad, playing video games, reading political thriller novels, being the comic relief/life of the party, hanging out with family and friends, as well as dancing A LOT! All in all, I think I am really just a motivated and optimistic person seeking to become that life coach to those who have been in my predicament or to those suffering worst, all the while maintaining a healthy relationship with those I interact with on a daily basis. =]
