The ladies were given masculine characteristics to show strength in the mans world of baseball. The movie is however flawed though. If I remember chorectly there was a scene involving a very short uniform which some of the girls had no problems wearing, although I believe Gena Davis objected to wearing it. I also think theres a flaw in assigning male characteristics to women to show power. Can a woman not be strong without being manly as well? The same thing happened in Thelma and Louise, Gena Davis starting out as a house wife and then being gruff, rude and ..'manly'Meaganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17384112056482549728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4285168458292387011.post-13149930834639405872011-05-07T09:32:56.547-04:002011-05-07T09:32:56.547-04:00I find it fascinatingly interesting that by "...I find it fascinatingly interesting that by "using masculine activities controlled by a female group, Penny Marshall demonstrates that women can take charge and empower themselves in any situation." We do not see a lot of directors in the Hollywood studio that effectively use the structure of masculinity as a form of women's empowerment. Lately films based around women has been a stereotypical ordeal in terms of being portrayed as "shopaholics, bitchy, etc." However, I love that Marshall is able to break women free of their stereotypes and use auteur theory to give them more systematically feminist roles. She was a feminist when it wasn't popular or easy but I admire her for going against the grain to make these movies.Stephaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17829520716266055099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4285168458292387011.post-60928919532506530892011-05-06T21:11:06.965-04:002011-05-06T21:11:06.965-04:00I agree with you completely and have always loved ...I agree with you completely and have always loved Penny Marshall. Laverne and Shirley was my favorite show growing up. I liked seeing 2 women independent and sassy. No other director had directed a film like "A League of their Own" and if anybody could have done a fabulous job at it it would have been Penny Marshall. She's in a League of her own.Melissa Sherbet-Torreshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05480951299635624419noreply@blogger.com
